4/6 Event: Art. Love. Music. in Brooklyn!

Image
On Sunday, April 6th I hosted Word Canvas presents Art. Love. Music. at Brooklyn's Rustik Tavern.  The event featured DuEwa Frazier (poet/performer), Rakiem Walker Project, Cheryl Boyce Taylor, Qurrat Kadwani, Radha MUSprime and Tai Allen. I was so excited about this event!  I have been performing, writing poetry and hosting my own signature events since 2002.  I founded Word Canvas in 2005, as a brand of performance events featuring musicians, poets and actors.  I take great pride and pleasure in curating events, bringing artists together and watching them come off without a hitch!   It was great to have a spring show with talented artists. DuEwa & Rakiem Walker @ Art. Love. Music. Cheryl Boyce Taylor is a notable poet and author who I've come to know and cherish, through her event series the Glitter Poemegranate Series.  I love when she performs with her Trini accent.  Her poems are smooth and bring back memories you wish you had...

Chatting with Danette Vigilante!

Image
Author Feature: Danette Vigilante The Trouble with Half a Moon by Danette Vigilante DF: Your first book about a teen girl named Dellie titled The Trouble with Half a Moon , has received great reviews. What inspired you to write this story? What has been the response from your teen readers? DV: As a kid, my heart had been broken by a little boy who was very similar to Corey, the neglected boy from Trouble. I carried that little boy around with me all these years and though I didn’t know exactly what I was writing when I finally sat down to write The Trouble with Half a Moon , I knew I wanted to give that little boy a chance for a good life. I realized right away that I needed someone brave enough to step up and help Corey and that’s where Dellie came in. Not only is she courageous but she was able to reach beyond her own hard times in order to help save him. The response from my teen readers has been goose bump inducing! The greatest thing I’ve heard from several students was ...

CONCERT REVIEW: Mos Def & Gil Scott Heron at Carnegie Hall!

Image
Mos Def's Big Band & Gil Scott Heron at Carnegie Hall by DuEwa Frazier On Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 8pm, presented by Festival Network in partnership with Carnegie Hall and co-produced by Jill Newman Productions , the JVC Jazz Festival brought Brooklyn’s own renaissance man, Dante Smith, a.k.a. Mos Def , to town with his big band Amino Alkaline Orchestra, featuring special guest Gil Scott Heron. Mos Def: Amino Alkaline – The Watermelon Syndicate rocked the dome of Carnegie Hall for a multi-general audience of what seemed like thousands. The show opened with Mos’ twenty-three piece band walking onto the stage and the image of the late, legendary radio man, talk show host, and activist, Petey Greene , shown overhead on a large screen above the stage, eating watermelon . Petey Greene urged the audience to eat and enjoy; perhaps a metaphor for the evening to come. Once his band was in place, Mos Def seemed to glide smoothly onto the stage, to the roar of shouts and applause. ...
