The Jumbies are COMING! NEW RELEASE by Tracey Baptiste

Image
I met fellow children's writer, Tracey Baptiste at the First Annual Kweli Children's Book Writers Conference in New York City earlier this year.  She's a writer with great energy, and like many of us, is on a mission to add diversity to the world of children's books.  I wish to congratulate Tracey on the release of THE JUMBIES.  She will have a second book launch event on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at La Casa Azul Bookstore from 6-8pm .  Check out reviews of The Jumbies: “Endlessly addictive and hypnotic.” — Essence Magazine  “This girl’s got guts . . . Corrine La Mer brings badassery and wisdom beyond her years. Launching brave kids into the world of the horror novel, and leading them through it with lyrical prose, author Tracey Baptiste knows just how to seize kids’ attention.”— Foreword Reviews “It’s refreshing to see a fantasy with its roots outside Europe . . . this is a book worth reading simply for its originality.”— Kirkus Reviews

Repost: Hanging with the Big Girls in My Traveling Shoes by Patricia Spears Jones

Image
This is a repost from award winning poet and author Patricia Spears Jones !  Check out her blog published at The Poetry Foundation! Patricia Spears Jones Hanging with the Big Girls in My Traveling Shoes by Patricia Spears Jones Last year when I was invited to receive an award from the Black Students Association at Rhodes College as part of my 40th College Reunion, I was freaked out. I had a few weeks earlier been to Arkansas to bury my mother and what little money I had was gone. But to be honored as a Distinguished Alumni for a group I helped to organize decades before was an important opportunity I could not say no to. A very good friend, a wonderful novelist and elder heard about my honor and knew my predicament. She took me to a shoe store on Broadway and let me choose a pair of beautiful, well made dress shoes. I would not look like a poor poet at such a gathering. They are in a way my “traveling shoes,” the ones for readings and special events: memoria...

"Angela's Mixtape" is a must see hip hop play!

Image
Eisa Davis has become one of my Supersheros! She's now in the same category of high genius art and inspiration for us emerging women artists, as Suzan Lori Parks, another creative sista I deeply admire. Eisa is an accomplished playwright, actress, poet and singer/songwriter. Her latest play "Angela's Mixtape" is a memoir, which in its genius, blends her perspective of life growing up as a post-civil rights/hip hop music loving/braniac girl, her thoughts on the meaning of her aunt's life (Angela Davis), and all that young Eisa aspires to be despite her family's criticism. I loved the play, which I saw this past Saturday night. It is running at the Ohio Theater until early May, featuring Eisa Davis and a full cast of actresses playing Eisa's family members (including Angela Davis). "Angela's Mixtape" is produced by the Hip Hop Theater Festival . You'll love the music featured in the play - a mix of 70's soul, 80's pop/rock a...

CONCERT REVIEW: Mos Def & Gil Scott Heron at Carnegie Hall!

Image
Mos Def's Big Band & Gil Scott Heron at Carnegie Hall by DuEwa Frazier On Saturday, June 28, 2008 at 8pm, presented by Festival Network in partnership with Carnegie Hall and co-produced by Jill Newman Productions , the JVC Jazz Festival brought Brooklyn’s own renaissance man, Dante Smith, a.k.a. Mos Def , to town with his big band Amino Alkaline Orchestra, featuring special guest Gil Scott Heron. Mos Def: Amino Alkaline – The Watermelon Syndicate rocked the dome of Carnegie Hall for a multi-general audience of what seemed like thousands. The show opened with Mos’ twenty-three piece band walking onto the stage and the image of the late, legendary radio man, talk show host, and activist, Petey Greene , shown overhead on a large screen above the stage, eating watermelon . Petey Greene urged the audience to eat and enjoy; perhaps a metaphor for the evening to come. Once his band was in place, Mos Def seemed to glide smoothly onto the stage, to the roar of shouts and applause. ...
