NEW BOOK: The Kid by Sapphire

Image
Award-winning poet and novelist Sapphire has a new book - The Kid (Penguin Press HC, The July 5, 2011) I ran into Sapphire in Manhattan several months ago at the subway.  This was right after the release of the film "Precious."  Sapphire is the first person and writer I sought advice from regarding MFA programs when I first moved to NYC.  She earned her MFA degree from Brooklyn College and has been a terrific example of what it means to be a woman artist who is fearless.  Sapphire is one of the few writers whose work affects me in such a way that her words compel me to want to go deeper in my own writing. When we talked last fall, I congratulated her on the success of her works and the film adaptation of Push .  I was interested to know what she would turn her attention to next.  A new volume of poetry? Another novel? Teaching on the college level?  Just from talking with her I could tell she had alot of new opportunities before her.  I re...

Alice Walker's NEW BOOK! Busboys & Poets 10/2 Furious Dance Event for Alice!

Image
Award-winning writer and activist, Alice Walker has a stunning new book of poems: HARD TIMES REQUIRE FURIOUS DANCING ! It was an honor to be on the scene at Walker's book party for Hard Times , last Saturday, October 2nd at Busboys & Poets in Washington, DC . There were many notable artists and activists there to celebrate Walker's new work. Alice Walker stood as a reflection of pure grace, wisdom, peace, and of course beauty. I was touched when I got the chance to speak to her and dance with her amongst the crowd. After Walker spoke to the audience, we danced the night away to the sounds of house, reggae, Fela, James Brown and other soulful music (courtesy of DJ Eye Am) that makes your spirit jump and your body sway. The above photo features Alice Walker in the center of the furious love vortex at Busboys & Poets and HEY, THAT'S ME TO THE RIGHT OF ALICE SMILING!!!
