NEW BOOK: Morning Haiku by Sonia Sanchez

Image
I was so happy to read this week that Dr. Sonia Sanchez has a new book! It is titled Morning Haiku and is due for release in February 2010. Dr. Sanchez is one of my artistic sheroes. Whenever I see her speak and perform I feel blessed to be in the same space with her. She is a legendary poet, author, activist and scholar who has mentored so many poets. Check out her new book, it's certainly on my reading list.

A New Year to Create, Live & Learn!!!

Image
So thankful for another year! This year had many twists and turns for me, creatively and otherwise. I started an M.F.A. in Creative Writing program, I left some things behind, I finished a few creative projects and started new ones! Through it all, I learned that change is good and it is always inevitable. I'm so looking forward to where the ever growing surge of creativity will lead to. Cheers to the New Year! DuEwa

National Novel Writing Month November 1 - November 30

What is NaNoWriMo? National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly. Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down. As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact t...

Tyler Perry Brings Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls to the Big Screen

Image
Tyler Perry is bringing Ntozake Shange's award winning play For Colored Girls, to the big screen . I am eager to find out which actresses will be cast in the roles for the movie. First staged in New York in 1974, Shange's "For Colored Girls..." became one of the most influential plays of its era. Following its acclaimed production at the Public Theater, the play moved to Broadway in 1976 with playwright Shange playing one of seven women who "reveal themselves, their lives, loves, hardships, and ultimately their discovery of strength and love." The production was nominated for a 1977 Best Play Tony Award, and actress Trazana Beverley won a Tony in the category of Best Actress in a Featured Role (Play), running for two years. In 1982, a version of the play was filmed for television with Shange and Beverly repeating their roles alongside Laurie Carlos, Alfre Woodard and Lynn Whitfield.
